Having a toddler and a baby at home is no joke. Some of the items you need to get through this are duct tape, rope, 8 arms, a cage…Oh wait, wrong list. Just kidding! But here is my list of essentials you really need to survive.
We all know sleep is hard to get when you have young ones that don’t, but it really is necessary. You always hear people say “nap when they nap,” and you seriously should. Your housework isn’t going anywhere. You will feel a million times better when you get some decent rest.
Coffee, Coffee, and more Coffee
Or any form of caffeine for that matter. For those days that you don’t get enough sleep. This will become a staple in your life, to get you through the rough ones. Well, that and wine.
This is where having 8 arms would be great! Having a baby and a toddler, someone will always need something, and it’s usually at the same time. Both of you offspring will want cuddled at the same time. The baby will need a bottle, the toddler a snack, and all while you are in the middle of making dinner. You will learn to do 10 things at once and you will perfect it, even without those extra arms.
Sense of Humor, Patience, and Adaptability
These 3 go hand in hand because you never know what will happen with not 1, but 2 gremlins in your house. You need to laugh at some situations so you don’t cry. Like when you find your dear baby has gotten poop everywhere in your living room or your darling toddler thought the baby should be covered in vaseline. You need to be able to change your plans on a whim because your baby decided to change her nap time or your toddler decided to fall asleep on the way to the grocery store. And patience is a must when your toddler decides he wants to dress himself or your baby cries incessantly because she suddenly hates her car seat but you have to be at an appointment.
Great Support System
Whether you want to admit that you need help or not, it makes it so much easier to deal with 2 little kiddos when you have people around to assist you. It could be help with housework, someone to bring you a meal, or just an ear to vent to, but get rid of your pride and accept any help that is offered. They say “it takes a village to raise a child” and it really does. So find your village and embrace them.
You will need time away from your dear children to maintain your sanity. You have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your kids. This is where your tribe helps. When someone offers their help, whether it be to babysit so you and your hubby can go to dinner or just so you can shower in peace, you take it.
This is the most important of all. This is essentially all your kids need from you. Love them unconditionally, because they will drive you bonkers at times. You need to not only tell them, but show them. Teach them to be kind and loving human beings, and they will grow up to make this world more tolerable. And isn’t that what we all want?
